MINURSO’S PEACEKEEPERS: NATIONAL DAY OF KYRGYZSTAN

On 31 August, MINURSO raised the flag of  Kyrgyzstan at the Mission HQ in Laayoune to mark the country’s national day. The day marks the independence of Kyrgyzstan in 1991 when the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz SSR adopted the Declaration of State Independence of the Republic.

Kyrgyzstan joined the UN in 1992 and currently 20 women and men from Kyrgyzstan serve in the UN field operations including in MINURSO.

The red field of Kyrgyzstan flag stands for "bravery and valor", and alludes to the purported emblem hoisted by Manas, the national hero of Kyrgyzstan. The sun epitomizes peace and prosperity, while its 40 rays stand for the number of tribes united by Manas to fight against the Mongols, as well as the number of followers he had.
